Put Yourself First—Self-Care Tips for Salon Success

As wax professionals, you dedicate your time and energy to making clients feel their best. But are you taking care of yourself with the same level of attention? With long hours on your feet and repetitive movements, prioritizing self-care is absolutely essential to keep you in kick-ass shape. But who has time, right? Check out these practical tips to keep your body, mind, and business in peak condition.

Nourish Your Body for Stamina and Strength

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Water is essential for energy, focus, and overall health. Aim for about 15 cups a day. If you're constantly moving and sweating, increase your intake. Keep a reusable water bottle nearby, and sip throughout the day rather than waiting until you're thirsty.

Start the Day with a Power Breakfast: Skipping breakfast can leave you sluggish and unfocused. Fuel up with a balanced meal that includes protein, healthy fats, and fiber to sustain your energy levels. Great options include:

  • Scrambled eggs with avocado and whole-grain toast

  • Greek yogurt with berries and nuts

  • A smoothie with spinach, protein powder, and almond butter

Healthy Snacks to Keep You Energized: Long gaps between meals can lead to crashes and fatigue. Keep your energy steady by having healthy, nutrient-dense snacks on hand, such as:

  • Almonds and dark chocolate

  • Hummus with carrot and cucumber sticks

  • A banana with peanut butter

  • Hard-boiled eggs

Get the Most Out of Your Body & Mind

Build in Recovery Time: Rushing from one appointment to the next can leave you feeling drained. Schedule at least 10-15 minutes between clients to reset, stretch, and organize your space. This time allows you to refocus and maintain high-quality service without burning out.

Move with Intention: You're likely on your feet for eight or more hours a day, which can take a toll on your body. To prevent pain and fatigue, pay attention to your posture and movement.

When Sitting During a Treatment:

  • Keep hips, knees, and ankles at a 90° angle or slightly higher.

  • Keep knee joints at or below the hip joints with ankles positioned slightly in front.

  • Maintain a three-finger-width gap between the back of your knee and the seat edge.

  • Avoid crossing your legs and keep feet flat on the floor or on a footrest.

  • Relax your shoulders, keeping them away from your ears.

  • Keep elbows close to your body for better control and reduced strain.

When Standing for a Treatment:

  • Stand shoulder-width apart with toes pointed forward.

  • Keep your back straight but not rigid, engaging your core muscles.

  • Maintain a slight bend in your knees to avoid locking them.

  • Relax your shoulders and avoid rounding them forward.

  • Use your forearms and body weight rather than your hands to apply pressure.

  • Shift weight between legs in a gentle rocking motion to prevent stiffness.

  • Take short breaks throughout the day to stretch and relieve tension.

Also, consider regular massage therapy, stretching, or yoga to counteract the physical demands of your job. Scheduling self-care activities is just as important as booking clients—your well-being directly impacts your business success.
